Last Wednesday night, I sat with a a friend in a somewhat dark parking lot, and the the stars were bright upon the dark sky, and we were all gazing up at them.
The moment was so mesmerizing that it made me think about the future. I turned to my friend, Tom and said, “What plans do you have for the future?”
He thought for a moment, then drew in a long breath. “Well, I plan to live and keep happy.”
I grinned and shook my head. “I don’t mean that. I mean careerwise.”
He sighed again and said, “None.”
I was dumbfounded…….well, almost.
He must’ve felt my disbelief because he went on explaining. “Many people are chasing after the wind. Looking for lovers, long-term relationships, houses, you name it, and they forget that one day all these things will slip through their fingers, and they themselves will cease to exist.” I felt him tilt his head towards me. “Death will claim them.”
I gazed at his silhouette in amazement and admiration, then cried, “But you need to sustain yourself!”
“I do sustain myself.” He said, “and am just moving with the flow of life. Whenever I need a job, I search for one, and at least I get where to sleep, what to eat, and what to wear.”
I then asked him if he was happy. He laughed. “Happy? Why! I’m the happiest guy I ever knew! I’m enjoying what I have, and enjoying it to the full. So yes, I’m happy!”
His outburst amazed me, but I had to agree with him all the same. A few rich families I know are hardly happy. They have a lot of money, but they never quite enjoy it because they are digging for more and paying no attention to the one at hand.
In just one night, and all because of my curiosity, I got the chance to look at life in another’s perspective, and I loved it, because it was realer than the life many are living.
I learnt something from someone who had dropped out of his first college semester, and had taken to doing casual jobs to survive. I realized that not being materially wealthy wasn’t as horrible as I’d pictured.
Such is what I reap when I’m open to all ideas. I learn to see life through other eyes, and this is a lot more thrilling than only knowing the life which I have pictured for myself.
My request to you of you is that you spend the weekend getting to know anyone close at hand, it could be your sibling, your own offspring, a friend, or the old lady gaga who likes walking her Rottweiler past your lawn every evening.
I promise that it will be worth it! Let me know the results, will you?
An amazing weekend t’you! 😊
